Resources

The 4-Hour Workweek

I’m a huge fan of Tim Ferriss, and this was my introduction to his life and writing. Read it this weekend, and there’s a great chance it can seriously change your outlook on your work/life balance.

Resources

The $100 Startup

Chris Guillebeau recently finished this book on “reinventing the way you make a living,” and already it’s become a fan-favorite. I couldn’t put it down, and am still working through the amazing worksheets, examples, and guidelines. Grab a copy–you won’t regret it!

Resources

On Writing

Even if you’re not into Stephen King, On Writing has been hailed as one of the best memoirs of the craft of writing. In addition, King includes an entire “book within a book” on the actual process of writing. I have a well-worn copy on my bookshelf, and I plan to read through once or twice a year.

Unmissable Apps

Resources

Scrivener

Hands-down the best software for writing, formatting, and organizing your longer documents. I use Scrivener for all of my fiction and non-fiction projects, and you can read more about that here.

It’s available in Mac or Windows format.

Resources

Screenflow 3 (Mac Only)

Whenever I do video or Webinar stuff, Screenflow is my go-to app of choice. It’s drop-dead simple to use: fire it up, press record, and start working.

Resources

Evernote

Evernote is simple: capture everything that you do on your computer, and organize it however you want.

I love it because it’s free, easy to use, and syncs across my phone, computer, and online.

Platform-Building Essentials

Resources

Woothemes

WooThemes makes the best premium templates for WordPress-based websites. I use them currently for my own blogs, and on clients’ blogs and websites.

Check out their features and options, and you’ll be sold as well.

Resources

Hostmonster

Hostmonster has been my web host since my very first website, back in 2005. They have probably the best support team (US-based, too!) of any company I’ve called, and they offer the easiest system to use (cPanel). Installing WordPress and many other platforms is a one-click process, and you’ll never run into any space restrictions, either.

Resources

MailChimp

I love MailChimp, and have been using them since they exploded onto the scene years ago. They’re one of the only email services that provide a completely free introductory offer, and it’s pretty amazing what you can do with it. If you are at all serious about your platform, you need to be building an email list.

Start with MailChimp, and you won’t look back!
